Pupil Journey
From Reception to Year 8, our pupils grow with curiosity, confidence and joy. At every stage, we combine high academic expectations with specialist teaching, building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy while developing character, independence and a lifelong love of learning.
Lower School (Reception to Year 2)
In the Lower School, pupils begin their journey through curiosity, fun and exploration. Learning through play underpins the early years, while laying strong academic foundations in phonics, reading, writing and numeracy.
Through carefully designed experiences and specialist teaching, pupils develop communication, confidence, and personal and social skills in a nurturing, structured environment. Early phonics, language development and mathematical understanding are taught with clarity and purpose, ensuring every child builds strong foundations.
As pupils move into Years 1 and 2, their curiosity develops into more structured learning. With high expectations for all, pupils build fluency in reading, writing and mathematics, express their ideas with growing confidence, and begin to think more deeply about their learning.
By the end of Year 2, pupils are confident, capable learners who are well prepared academically and socially for the next stage of their education.
Prep School (Years 3 to 8)
As pupils move into the Prep School, their learning develops in depth and complexity. In Years 3 and 4, the curriculum expands to include deeper thinking and meaningful collaboration. Pupils develop resilience, creativity and independence, supported by a broad and engaging curriculum.
Specialist teaching enriches learning across subjects, while strong foundations in literacy and numeracy continue to be developed with high expectations for all. Pupils become increasingly engaged and determined, enjoying challenges and taking pride in their achievements.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils look ahead to new horizons. They refine their writing, deepen their reasoning abilities and develop sophisticated thinking across the curriculum. From Year 6, pupils benefit from greater subject specialism, preparing them for the demands of senior school. By the end of Year 6, pupils are resilient, confident and academically well prepared for 11+ or for continuing their journey into Years 7 and 8.
Years 7 and 8 are a time of academic maturity, leadership and independence. Pupils benefit from specialist teaching across subjects, enabling them to develop depth of knowledge, intellectual curiosity and a genuine love of scholarship. They think critically, articulate ideas with confidence, and pursue areas of interest with increasing independence and expertise. Alongside this, they take on leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to the school community. They grow into thoughtful, empathetic young people who understand their place in the world, striving for achievement while remaining grounded in the school’s values. By the time they leave for Year 9, pupils are confident, capable and aspirational young people ready to thrive academically and personally in senior school and beyond.
The school has excellent facilities and staff. We think there is a good balance of enjoying the awe and wonder of childhood and preparing children for the next stage. We feel very lucky to be at Thomas’s.
