At Thomas’s Clapham, we believe in nurturing the whole child, intellectually, creatively, physically and emotionally. Across every subject and discipline, our purpose is the same: a relentless focus on learning that which gives every child the best possible opportunities in which to make progress.
Our curriculum is rooted in the best of the National Curriculum and informed by the ISEB Common Entrance framework. These provide the foundations upon which we build a rich, ambitious and engaging educational experience that goes far beyond statutory requirements. Rather than viewing these frameworks as an end in themselves, we use them as the starting point for a curriculum that inspires curiosity, deepens understanding and equips every child with the knowledge, skills and habits of mind to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Learning in the Lower School lays the foundations for future success. Here, pupils develop secure English and Maths skills, a love of reading, confidence in communication and the resilience to embrace challenge. These fundamental skills are carefully nurtured alongside creativity, collaboration and independence, ensuring that every child is equipped to flourish as they move through the school.
When children join our school in Reception at the age of four, they embark on a rich and carefully designed curriculum that nurtures every aspect of their development. Rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, learning is organised across seven interconnected areas: Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.
As pupils transition into Year 1 and 2, pupils have lessons in English (with separate phonics and reading), Maths, Science, Understanding the World (Humanities), Religious Education and PSHE taught by class teachers.
In our Prep School from Year 3, academic rigour sits alongside intellectual curiosity. Our teachers challenge pupils to think critically, solve complex problems, ask thoughtful questions and make meaningful connections across all subjects. Lessons are carefully designed to stretch every pupil, providing appropriate support where needed and extension where possible, so that each child is continually growing in confidence and capability.
The majority of academic subjects are taught by expert class teachers, providing continuity of care and a deep understanding of each pupil’s progress. In Year 5, specialist teaching occurs in Reasoning and Science. This extends to Latin, Maths, English, Humanities (Geography, History and TPE) in Years 6, 7 and 8. Languages of the World (French and Spanish) are delivered by specialist teachers, broadening pupils’ linguistic and cultural understanding.
We are proud to offer our Year 7 and 8 pupils the Thomas’s Baccalaureate: a programme designed to complement our rigorous Common Entrance curriculum. Far more than a record of achievement, the Baccalaureate provides a structured framework through which pupils can explore a breadth of pursuits, develop essential personal qualities, and build the character that senior schools genuinely value, and that life beyond school genuinely demands.
This commitment to excellence is reflected in our outstanding preparation for senior school. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils are exceptionally well prepared for the demands of senior school entry, including ISEB pre-tests, Common Entrance and school-specific assessments. At the same time, we recognise that every child’s journey is unique. Working closely with families, our Assistant Head: Future Schools provides personalised guidance throughout the senior school application process, helping each pupil identify the school where they will flourish academically, socially and personally. Through tailored preparation, expert advice and individual support, every child leaves Thomas’s Clapham confident, well prepared and excited for the next stage of their education.
The success of this approach is evident in the breadth of destinations our pupils achieve and the wide range of academic, creative, sporting, music, drama and all-round scholarships they are awarded each year.
